NEC Indonesia Promotes Digital Transformation in the Transportation and Logistics Sector

Jakarta, 9 September 2021 – PT. NEC Indonesia (NEC Indonesia) has called on the transportation and logistics sectors in Indonesia to embrace digital transformation at the NEC Industry 4.0 Web Summit on 26 August 2021. Under the theme “Digital Experience in Transportation Solutions”, the event featured a keynote address by the Minister of Transportation, Republic of Indonesia, Mr. Budi Karya Sumadi.

Many large cities around the world today are suffering from traffic congestion due to the lack of efficient mass transit systems. Separately, megacities such as Jakarta face challenges from rapid urbanization and increasing population.

As a result, many citizens either travel on motorcycles or their cars – all of which adds to the already overloaded and crippled road networks in Jakarta. Consequently, the existing public transport infrastructure becomes more unreliable and overcrowded, driving interest and demand away from such public services.

In his keynote speech, Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi, said, “Digital transformation is a necessity for modern transportation, including those who are engaged in the transportation sector. It requires the incorporation of innovative digital transport solutions to be introduced in the transportation sector. This is followed by the development and operation of an intelligent transportation system.”

Recognizing the need for safe, secure and seamless smart transportation systems, NEC Indonesia has developed a portfolio of solutions which can help governments manage traffic congestion using technologies such as AI and IoT. Starting from the fleet management system for bus transportation service providers, ticket clearing systems that allow passengers to only tap in and tap out one time in the same route even though they change transportation modes, facial recognition technology as a substitute for physical tickets that is integrated with an Account Based Ticketing (ABT) system, to AI technology that can analyze driver behavior while driving.

Mr. Joji Yamamoto, President Director, NEC Indonesia, said, “NEC’s smart transportation systems can be utilized in different sectors, including aviation, rail and roads. Our transportation solutions have been deployed by local authorities around the world who are upgrading their infrastructures with a view to improving the overall public transportation experience to encourage travelers and commuters to leave their vehicles at home.”

Dr. Rudi Rusdiah, Chairman, Big Data & AI Association (ABDI), and moderator of the panel discussion during the Summit, said, “The Covid-19 pandemic period can be a catalyst to accelerate digital transformation in the transportation and logistics industry, as one of the most important sectors during the pandemic. “Initiatives in exploring and leveraging new digital technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Block Chain, Big Data, and the Internet of Things (IoT), have to be carried out in order to revolutionize and encourage the integrity of digital technology in the transportation business process.”

One of the panelists, Mr. Mochammad Irzan, Systems Engineering Senior Manager, Juniper Networks, added, “Networks are an essential part of the overall digital transportation infrastructure; therefore, it is important to have a reliable, secure and AI-driven network that can power and futureproof the modern transportation systems of today and tomorrow.”

The Web Summit featured various reputable speakers, including: Siti Choiriana - Director of Courier and Logistic Business, PT POS Indonesia; David Santoso - Vice Chief of ORGANDA, R&D Technology; David Herman Jaya – Chairman of the Board of Trustees ASKARINDO; Richard Duggan, General Manager of Critical Infrastructure, Smart Transport and IoT Business, NEC Australia; and Dirk Pieter Siegers – Assistant General Manager, NEC Indonesia.

Over 480 key industry players and representatives attended the event, which was jointly organized by NEC Indonesia, Juniper and the Big Data & AI Association (ABDI).
